Getting Ready for Summer

Each summer brings many many days of extreme heat for us. In addition to the heat, we also have lots of humidity and at times, daily thunderstorms. All of this makes it hard to be outside a lot during the summer. But, of course, with small children, you make an effort to get outside.

One way we have found we can have fun and withstand the heat is by being in water. Water parks are awesome for this. We can do an entire day of outside fun when able to go back and forth from either a pool, water slide, or splash area. Our five-year-old especially loves it. However, visiting water parks regularly can get expensive. So, why not make our own “water park” at home?

I figured all we needed was a pool, a slip and slide, and a water hose. We already own a slip and slide thanks to a good friend of ours that gave it to us as a gift a couple of years ago – we’ve just been waiting for baby girl to be old enough to use it! The pool I picked up at Walmart; they have quite a few to choose from, but baby girl and I settled on the My Sunshine Hippo and Coco Fun Play Center. Doesn’t it look like fun? We figured she would enjoy the hippo slide while baby boy could sit in the pool area.

A couple of other items we needed to get ourselves ready for summer was a bathing suit for baby boy, a swim shirt (which I just learned is actually called a rashguard), and an extra bathing suit for baby girl. We found all we needed and are planning to have a fun water park day at abuela’s house soon, maybe even this coming weekend!

The good thing is that the pool is one we can use next year as well – as long as my kids don’t abuse it. And, with plenty of beach trips coming up in the next couple of months, the swimwear will come in handy this summer.

How do you get ready for summer fun?
