Dad and baby

I’m currently on maternity leave: The following is a guest post by Raúl J. Colón.

I would have never thought of writing a post related to this topic, but here I am writing a list of things for the great day I become a daddy. These last few months I have been preparing to welcome my first child (Daniela).

Building my business and planning to be a dad can be two difficult tasks to handle, especially when you feel that getting ready to be a dad is priority over your business. I am starting by making a list of things we need for that very important day when my daughter decides to have her birthday. Since this is my first time doing this exercise, it would be great if everyone can help me add, remove, or edit the list (help is appreciated).

Hospital Packing List for the First-Time Dad

Getting to the Hospital

Just make sure you have enough gas in your tank and change ($$$) for parking. Since I live in the Caribbean, I make it a priority (especially during hurricane season) to have as close to a full tank of gas all the time.

When In Labor

For Mom

I will probably review this list a few more times, but here it goes:

  • Make sure the medication she is taking is at hand or in the bag already.
  • Comfortable nightgown or t-shirt with slippers and any other item she feels comfortable in. I have also read a front opening nightgown would be a better option. (What do you guys think?)
  • Make sure she has her toiletries. Pack a toothbrush, tissues (so we can share while I cry), hair bands, face wipes, wipes, and any other items that will make her comfortable.
  • Special items, such as breast pads, nursing bras, super absorbent sanitary towels, and at least 3 pairs of cotton or disposable pants.
  • Music – it can be your iPod, MP3 Player, Cd Player, Walkman, or your 8-track (although the last two options might not be as mobile and your music options might be limited).

For Baby

  • Vest and baby gown
  • Blanket
  • 7-8 nappies
  • Rash creams and wipes
  • Hat and mittens if it’s chilly. Although my baby will be born in December, I am sure our great climate on the island will have me taking this off my list.
  • I read a paper nail file is needed. I saw this on one of the lists, but am not sure what it is fully for.

For Dad

  • Drinks and snacks
  • Change for payphone and parking
  • List of phone numbers for family and friends (make a category or list on your smart phone, iPad, or a note pad). I will probably send a text message to family members, informing them. I will also delegate the task of calling close family members to someone so I can focus on my task at hand – delivering the baby.
  • Newspapers, puzzles, and books might be a good option. Although, in my case, I will stay clear from the local newspapers (Puerto Rico) since they are really not a reliable source and mostly focus on negative news.
  • A camera and/or video camera. I already bought a Flip Cam, which is a very inexpensive option to record HD video. I will also have my digital camera on hand.
  • Keep a pen and note pad on hand just in case you have to jot down any important information for your purposes or that you wish to share – like the time baby was born or any other thought that might arise.
  • Last but not least, I will make sure to keep my iPad handy, which will probably keep me from having to carry many of the items I mentioned earlier.

Going Home

Make sure you have a car seat to take the baby home and an extra set of clean clothes for baby and mommy.

I hope this list is useful for other first-time dads like me. I made up the list from a few articles I read online (and adding my point of view).

I still think I might be missing something. Do you think I missed something that might help us during that day? If I did or you have any other items that you suggest I include, please feel free to share them in the comments area.

It’s Baby Time!

life

It’s a little surreal to look at my daughter who turns five years old today and know that at this time tomorrow, I’ll be holding a newborn. It’s also very exciting. Tomorrow morning, we’ll be heading to the hospital to prepare for the birth of our baby boy that afternoon. I am nervous, excited, anxious, […]

How Does a Baby Get Out Of the Mommy’s Belly?

life

A few months back, our family of three sat down to eat dinner on a night as ordinary as any other. Ordinary, that is, until mid-way through the food on my plate, just as I was about to stick my fork into my mouth, my 4 year old baby girl pipes up and asks, “How […]
