Mom and Baby Nursing

Five years ago, when I had my daughter, I was working full-time outside the home. After a short maternity leave of three months, I returned to work full-time and found myself needing to pump about every three hours in order to keep up my breast milk supply. Unfortunately, at that time, my work space consisted of a space that was not even a full cubicle and was in a shared office with six co-workers. The only offices that had doors were not my own. Because I couldn’t really ask them to borrow their office for 30+ minutes in order for me to pump my milk, I ended up using the bathroom whenever I needed to pump. The problem with that? It was a multiple stall bathroom, not a private one.

So, there I was, a new mom, three months postpartum and pumping my breast milk every few hours in a public bathroom stall. The sound of the breast pump alone was embarrassing, but so was having to explain my absence multiple times a day to my boss. The type of job I had at that time was one that required my presence at my desk on a consistent basis, since I could receive walk-ins from students with questions. Suffice it to say, that pumping was not the most pleasant experience for me and I was unable to keep up with it enough to maintain a steady milk supply.

When I got pregnant with our second child, I knew that this time I would have a better chance of breastfeeding our baby for a longer period of time, since I now have a home-based business. I knew that I would still have to pump, but at least this time, it would be easier. So, I took out my old breast pump – a single electric pump – and cleaned it out in preparation. Shortly after, though, I was contacted by a Lansinoh representative to try out the Lansinoh® Affinity™ Double Electric Breast Pump. I was excited to see how a double pump would work out compared to the single pump I had previously used.

I’ve been nursing our baby boy since he was born a little over two months ago. But, it wasn’t until last month, that I had a chance to start using the Lansinoh Affinity™ breast pump. My daughter and I had the opportunity to travel on the inaugural christening voyage of the Disney Dream cruise ship. I used the pump a few times before our trip to leave behind some milk for my husband to feed our son while I was gone. However, the major benefit was being able to take the pump with me on our trip and using it to keep up my milk supply. Since it’s a double pump, I was able to pump my milk in half the time it would have taken me with my single pump. That meant I didn’t need to take lengthy breaks from the fun we were having!

Actually, the first day of our trip, our luggage did not arrive to our room until the early evening. I had pumped some in the morning before packing up the pump, but then was without a breast pump the rest of the day until our luggage arrived. As soon as our luggage arrived, I sat down to pump and within five minutes was done!

Here is some additional information about the Lansinoh Affinity™ breast pump, as provided to me:

  • The Affinity™ employs technology developed by Lansinoh to provide a pumping experience that is as close as possible to a nursing baby.
  • One-touch let-down button and multiple settings for speed and suction
  • It is a closed system pump, preventing milk from backing up into the tubing—a hygienic feature.
  • Designed for everyday long term use at home or away
  • AC adaptor or battery operated
  • BPA free

Are you currently breastfeeding or are pregnant and plan to breastfeed? One of you will have the chance to try out the Lansinoh® Affinity™ Double Electric Breast Pump for yourself!
